The Power Of "Yes" When Setting Limits

What if you said “yes” to everything your child asked for a full 24 hours?

That’s the premise of the movie, “Yes Day” on Netflix.

I can feel the disbelief, tension, fear and resistance most of us are probably experiencing as we imagine this actually happening.

It would be chaos!

You have to teach your kids that there are limits!

What if they want to do something dangerous?

Yes, 100 times yes!

And

Hear me out here.

If you find yourself saying “no” to your kids way more often than you’d like,

and, especially, if you’re feeling bad about it, (this happens to a lot of us!)

There's a way to say "yes," even when you're thinking "no," in certain situations.

There’s no dishonesty involved.

It sounds like this:

Kid: Can I have a piece of candy?
𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵: 𝘠𝘦𝘴, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸. 𝘞𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘺 𝘢 𝘥𝘢𝘺.

Kid: Can you play with me?
𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵: 𝘠𝘦𝘴, 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘐 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘢 𝘧𝘦𝘸 𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴.

Kid: Can I go out with my friends?
𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵: 𝘠𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘴.

Ever tried this approach?

✅ It can reduce arguments and gain your child's cooperation
because the first word your child hears from you is “yes,” and you’re telling them they can have what they want.

✅ It helps you feel better as a parent
because of the more positive reaction you’re getting from your kids, and because you don’t feel like the negative parent who says no all the time.
