Be Like Kate From "This Is Us"
First let me say that Tuesday’s episode (4/5/22) of “This Is Us” was well done, but particularly tense and gutting!
In one of the most emotionally difficult scenes, Kate and Toby fight about their marriage and how to raise their son who is blind.
As they criticize each other’s parenting choices, Kate responds:
“𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺. 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦. 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦. 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘛𝘰𝘣𝘺... 𝘚𝘰 𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭, 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴. 𝘚𝘰 𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦’𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯.”
In just a few words, Kate spells out her parenting philosophy and how it informs the way she’s raising her son.
Although she explains her approach for raising a child who is blind, I suspect that Kate’s philosophy is also based on two other factors:
1) instilling in her child the confidence and self-respect she has struggled with her whole life.
2) building on the best parts of her parents’ loving parenting style.
All these elements are important parts of any parenting philosophy.
We could all benefit from being as clear and thoughtful as Kate about our parenting.
=> What is your parenting philosophy?
=> What are the values that guide the way you are raising your children?
=> What are the values and beliefs you are trying to instill in your children so they get in their souls, their cells, and help them grow into the best version of themselves?
