Don't Forget to Take Care of You!

I have heard so many parents say, “I haven’t had time for myself in months!” Not taking time for ourselves can really add to our stress and ultimately lead to having less energy and focus to get things done. Or if you’re stressed and just keep pushing yourself to get through each day, you might burn out. Neither of these scenarios is ideal.

I’m no stranger to pushing myself through short periods of stress. I’ve also lived through months-long stress when my husband was very ill. I’ve learned through experience how much I can handle and how much better I feel when I prioritize sleep, exercise, eating healthy food, or even reading for just 10 minutes before bed to help myself unwind. My wish for all of us is that we don’t put off taking care of ourselves. You matter so very much. So, I want to encourage you to consider things you could do even for just a few minutes each day, to take care of yourself.

Some examples of self-care:

Reading, working on a puzzle, engaging in a favorite hobby, listening to your favorite music, going for a walk, taking short breaks during the work day, doing yoga poses, doing part of an exercise video, meditating for three minutes, dancing to your favorite song, calling a friend, taking a long shower or bath, eating healthy food, getting more sleep.

Choose whatever resonates with you. Connecting with others through phone calls, video chats, or online dinners together is also self-care. Relationships are important for our mental health and sustenance.

What would you like to do to take even better care of yourself?
